Image

The spine is not just a part of our body but it is known to perform numerous key functions. It provides structure to our body and protects some of the important nerves and the spinal cord. Besides this, our spine also helps transfer signals to our brain from different parts of the body. If any injury or condition affects the structure of the spine, its functions automatically get affected.

It won’t be wrong to say that spinal problems are becoming common and more people are getting affected. Some of the conditions are so severe that surgery is required for the treatment.

Here, we are going to discuss some of the common spinal issues that are reported to affect people around the world.

Common Spinal Problems

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc is a condition in which one of the spinal discs present between each vertebrae ruptures. This either causes displacement of the disc or movement of the nucleus present at the center of the disc out. In most cases, disc herniation results in nerve compression and that causes various symptoms including pain, numbness, and tingling.

A herniated disc may either occur due to age-related degradation or a traumatic injury like an automobile accident. This condition is becoming more common than before.

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is when one of the vertebrae slips out of its place onto the vertebra present below it. Lower back pain is the commonest symptom associated with spondylolisthesis and it becomes severe if ignored. In some cases, spondylolisthesis may also result in compression of the spinal cord and that could aggravate many symptoms.

The doctors always try to manage symptoms with physical therapy and medication but, serious cases often require surgery and it is known to be effective in maximum cases.

Spinal Myelopathy

This is when the spinal cord degenerates due to aging. It is known to cause pain, loss of balance, weakness in muscles, numbness in feet and hands, and tingling. According to the reports, surgery may be required to relieve symptoms and prevent the worsening of the condition.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a spinal condition that is known to occur in the early stages of our life. Scoliosis is often diagnosed in adolescents. This condition is characterized by the abnormal bending of the spine and that results in uneven shoulder and/or hips. As scoliosis progresses, it might also start causing breathing problems due to a reduction in the space for the lungs to expand.

Most cases of the condition are not known to require any treatment but in severe cases, surgery may be needed.

Compression Fracture

A compression fracture occurs due to age-related degeneration of the spine. It starts with a stress fracture or cracks in the vertebrae. With time, the spine experiences more cracks and that results in a compression fracture.

Those who smoke more or have bone cancer are highly prone to developing the condition. Besides this, a compression fracture is also common in women over 50 years of age.
